Meet the new Head of Operations & Social Impact of #HumansofFyreflyz

We prepared a few questions about them to find out how they are adapting here at Fyreflyz! Let’s see what they had to say!

What excites you most about the work Fyreflyz does, and why does it matter to you?

Mai:

  • Fyreflyz is unique to me – how we are able to create and provide opportunities to those who may not have had the same starting point as others. We’re more than just running programmes, to me we work together to create pathways for life growth and of course, confidence! This matters to me as I’ve seen personally seen how someone’s guidance and patience combined with your own personal grit can change your life’s trajectory so being in Fyreflyz reminded me of those times where I had to pull myself back up and I wanted to be part of something that is able to change potential into possibility.

What kind of leader do you see yourself as, and how do you hope that shows up at Fyreflyz?

Mai:

  • I’ve always seen myself as an empathetic leader but lately – I wanted to challenge myself and move towards being a more firm & fair leader. I hope that it will reflect as leading with empathy, respect and understanding while maintaining clear expectations, accountability and consistency.

What are 3 things you're excited to build or contribute to during your time here?

Mai:

  • I’m excited about how we can continue building, expanding and sharing resources for the youths in Singapore as well as globally. I think having a strong eco-system will benefit a lot more youths! Aside from that, I hope to build a team culture where innovation, creativity and ownership can thrive.

If you could be in any movie, what would it be and what character would you play? Why?

Mai:

  • I’d like to be Winnie the Pooh in the movie Christopher Robin. Pooh is caring, dependable, and willing to help his friends even when he doesn’t know all the answers. Aside from that, I like that he is always kind and genuine.

What's your go-to lunch order — and what does it say about you?

Mai:

  • Nasi Ayam Penyet – probably that I need my spices, carbs and protein!

What did you write on the Wall of Wisdom, and what's the story behind it?

Mai's Words of Wisdom

Mai:

  • Not much of a story but it’s something I tell myself when I start to worry about things that are out of my control.

What's one thing you'd tell someone stepping into a leadership role for the first time?

Mai:

  • I’d say that you will learn and grow together with your team – so it is important to hear each other out, be mindful of the way you speak, and treat them kindly. Your team will make or break you! And most importantly, remember to try your best to check in.
